What We Do

Family Resilience & Settlement Support
We focus on equipping African immigrant families with the practical knowledge and tools needed to navigate Canadian life successfully and reduce social isolation. Our targeted family workshops cover essential areas such as financial literacy (budgeting, credit, saving), parenting strategies in a Canadian context, and crucial guidance on effectively accessing and navigating the Canadian education and healthcare systems. By providing this holistic support, we ensure families feel confident and prepared to thrive in their new environment, fostering stability and well-being from the ground up.

Bridging Intergenerational & Cultural Gaps
Recognizing the common communication and cultural disconnects that can arise between immigrant parents and their Canadian-raised youth, we facilitate structured Intergenerational Dialogues. These sessions create safe, mediated spaces for parents and youth to share perspectives, express challenges, and foster mutual understanding and respect. The goal is to move beyond conflict to build stronger, more empathetic family relationships that honor cultural heritage while embracing the realities of life in Calgary, ultimately strengthening the family unit.

Cultivating Mental Wellness & Emotional Resilience
We deliver culturally sensitive mental wellness and resilience workshops specifically tailored to address the unique stressors and systemic challenges faced by Black immigrant youth. These programs focus on building emotional intelligence, developing healthy coping mechanisms for stress and trauma, and promoting self-care. By prioritizing mental health, we aim to reduce the risks of social isolation or disconnection, ensuring African youth have the internal strength and resources to face obstacles with confidence and stability.

Youth Leadership Development & Mentorship
We actively invest in the next generation by providing dynamic leadership camps and retreats. These programs are designed to build practical skills like public speaking, teamwork, and decision-making, while strategically blending African cultural identity with professional aspiration. Through mentorship from successful community and professional Black role models, we build confidence, instill cultural pride, and empower youth to see themselves as future leaders capable of positively influencing their peers and the wider Calgary community.

Fostering Civic Engagement & Advocacy Skills
We encourage active citizenship by offering comprehensive training on civic participation. This includes practical education on understanding how local government works, the importance and mechanics of volunteering, and concrete skills for effective advocacy regarding community issues. Furthermore, we establish a formal Youth Council within our organization, providing participants with a platform to lead volunteer projects and develop advocacy initiatives, giving them hands-on experience in community building and democratic processes.

Providing Essential Support Resources & Tools
To maximize the long-term impact of our programs, we develop and distribute crucial resources to our community. This includes creating a comprehensive Family Support Handbook (available digitally and in print) that is translated into key languages, including English and French. This guide acts as a foundational resource, consolidating information on settlement services, key community contacts, and culturally relevant advice, ensuring families have easily accessible, tangible tools long after they attend our workshops.
